ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which $20 AI Is Actually Worth It?

ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini: Which $20 AI Is Actually Worth It?

Every AI company on Earth has decided that the correct price for a smart robot is twenty dollars a month. OpenAI wants $20. Anthropic wants $20. Google wants $19.99, because Google enjoys being technically different. Same money, three very different products, and the pricing pages are all written like the features explain themselves. They do not. I read all three official plan pages so you do not have to, and here is the honest version, with prices and plans checked as of November 2026.

By Ruan Martini, Daily Checkpoint

Quick warning before the receipts: all three companies change these plans constantly, rename things, and move features between tiers whenever they feel like it. Google literally moved its best Gemini models out of the free app in October 2026. So treat this as a snapshot, not a stone tablet.

Update, November 2: both of OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s next models may have just leaked on the same weekend, and I am labeling this rumor, not fact, because neither company has said a word. On the OpenAI side, screenshots from Codex users show a model label called GPT-6.2 Astra handling part of their usage, even though OpenAI’s own model list still only shows GPT-6 Astra. On the Anthropic side, the name Claude Mythos 5.5 briefly appeared inside the code of Anthropic’s official Mythos page on November 1, spotted by TestingCatalog, and was gone again within hours. Mythos is the restricted Claude line for verified cybersecurity and biology work, so a 5.5 there would hint that a new public Claude is being prepared too, but hint is the whole sentence. No specs, no prices and no dates are confirmed for either model, and some of the numbers flying around for a supposed Fable 5.5 were copied from the current model’s price file. I wrote up the full leak breakdown with what is proven and what is not. When either company announces something real, I will update the verdicts above with the actual details.

What the $20 actually buys today

ChatGPT Plus, $20 a month (OpenAI). This is the famous one. Plus gets you OpenAI’s advanced reasoning models (the GPT-6 family, per OpenAI’s pricing page), much higher usage limits than free, deep research reports, image creation, voice mode, projects to organize your chats, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, and expanded access to Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent. There is no annual billing. It is $20 every month, $240 a year, take it or leave it. The free tier still exists, but free ChatGPT now shows ads in some regions and limits everything interesting.

Claude Pro, $20 a month, or $17 a month billed annually (Anthropic). Claude Pro is the quiet one that writers and programmers keep recommending to each other. It gets you Anthropic’s model lineup (Opus, Sonnet and Haiku tiers), at least five times the free plan’s usage per session according to Anthropic, unlimited Projects, and, this is the big one, Claude Code included, Anthropic’s terminal coding agent that developers genuinely love. Usage runs on rolling five hour windows plus a weekly cap, which sounds annoying until you realize it stops one heavy day from eating your whole month. The annual option at $200 up front is the only real discount in this whole article.

Google AI Pro, $19.99 a month (Google). Google sells a bundle, not just a chatbot. AI Pro gets you the Gemini app with its top models (Gemini 3.1 Pro, and Gemini 4 Argon began rolling out to Pro subscribers in October 2026), a one million token context window, Deep Research, Gemini built into Gmail and Docs, higher limits on NotebookLM (Google’s research notebook tool, which is quietly one of the best study tools ever made), monthly credits for Flow video generation, and, pay attention, 5 TB of Google storage and YouTube Premium Lite in the box. Read that again. Half of this plan is not even AI. It is a storage and bundle deal wearing an AI costume, and for a lot of people that is exactly why it wins.

Where each one actually wins

Writing and sounding human: Claude. If you write for a living, or you study and produce a lot of text, Claude’s output needs the least editing. It rambles less, it argues better, and it handles long documents with a one million token context window on current models. For my own work on this site and the channel, Claude style output is the one that reads least like a robot wrote it at gunpoint.

Coding: a real fight between Claude and ChatGPT. Claude Code has the developer fanbase and the reputation for careful, project wide work. ChatGPT counters with Codex inside Plus and very strong reasoning models. Gemini is capable, but for most people it is third in this specific race unless you already live inside Google’s developer tools. Honest answer: serious coders should trial both for a month. Hobbyists, pick whichever chat app you like better, both are absurdly good compared to two years ago.

Research and very long documents: Gemini and Claude, for different reasons. Gemini’s Deep Research plus NotebookLM is a study machine: feed it sources, get organized notes and briefings. ChatGPT’s deep research is also excellent and better formatted for sharing. Claude wins when the job is one gigantic document or codebase that has to fit in its head at once.

Images and fun stuff: ChatGPT. Image creation is where Plus still feels like magic for normal users: thumbnails, concepts, edits, memes with your dog wearing sunglasses. Gemini generates images and short video through Flow credits, which is a nice bonus, but ChatGPT is the one your friends will ask you to make things with.

Phone life and everyday convenience: Gemini, if you are already in Google’s world. Gemini in Gmail and Docs, the Android integration, the storage, the family sharing for up to five people on the plan. If your whole digital life is already Google, this $19.99 is doing four jobs at once.

The honest limits nobody prints in big letters

None of the three publishes a clean, exact message count for the $20 tiers. You get words like “expanded” and “higher limits,” and a window that resets every five hours, and you find the real ceiling by hitting it. All three can still make things up with total confidence, all three have bad days, and all three reserve the right to rename your favorite model on a Tuesday. Also, your subscription does not include API access for your own apps on OpenAI or Anthropic. Different bill, different universe. Google at least throws in $10 a month of Cloud credits on AI Pro, which developers can spend on the Gemini API.

And the free tiers are not the escape hatch they used to be. Since October 9, 2026, Google’s free Gemini app only includes its lightest model, with the strong models behind AI Pro. Free ChatGPT limits the good features and may show ads. Free Claude is genuinely useful but runs out fast. The companies have all figured out the same trick: make free good enough to hook you and small enough to annoy you.

My verdict, by kind of human

Student: Google AI Pro, and check the student offer first. Google has been offering eligible students a free year of AI Pro (redeem by December 31, 2026, terms apply), and even at full price, NotebookLM alone justifies it for studying. Anthropic, for the record, offers no student discount at all. Rude, but honest.

Small business owner: ChatGPT Plus if your work is writing, marketing and ideas. Google AI Pro if your business already runs on Gmail and Drive, because the 5 TB of storage and the built in help across your inbox might be worth more than the chatbot itself.

Creator (YouTuber, streamer, designer): ChatGPT Plus. The image generation, the writing help, the deep research for video topics, and the fact that every tutorial on the internet assumes you have it. Claude is my second subscription here for scripts that need to sound like a person.

Gamer who just wants help sometimes: Honestly? Start free. If the free limits start annoying you weekly, buy the one your phone already loves: Gemini on Android, ChatGPT everywhere else. Do not pay $20 to ask an AI why your game is lagging twice a month. That is what I am here for.

Final call: There is no universal winner, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling the one they picked. Claude is the best writer and the coder’s favorite. ChatGPT is the best all rounder and the image machine. Gemini is the best bundle and the best value if Google already owns your files. Pick by your life, not by the benchmark chart.
