Ananta Is Free, It Is Anime GTA, and It Launches Eight Weeks After GTA 6

Every studio on Earth spent 2026 running away from one release date. One studio looked at the calendar, looked at the smoking crater where November 19 used to be, and calmly parked a free open world city eight weeks behind it. I respect the nerve. I also have questions.

By Ruan Martini, Daily Checkpoint, November 1, 2026

Let me explain the bet, because the bet is the whole story here. GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. That date has bent the entire industry around it. Publishers moved games out of the fall. Publishers moved games out of the year. Xbox delayed Fable into February 2027 and basically admitted GTA 6 was the reason, which I wrote about in this same Coming Soon section and still cannot quite believe they said out loud.

And then there is NetEase. On August 25, 2026, at gamescom Opening Night Live, NetEase and developer Naked Rain put a date on their urban open world RPG, Ananta: January 15, 2027. Worldwide. On PlayStation 5, PC, iOS and Android, all at the same time. Not November, because nobody is that brave. Not June 2027, because nobody wants to wait that long. January 15. Fifty seven days after the biggest entertainment launch in history, a free anime-flavored GTA walks into the room, sits down next to Leonida, and says: nice city. Mind if I build one too?

That is either the smartest scheduling move of 2027 or a beautiful disaster, and honestly, I can argue both sides before my coffee gets cold. Let me lay out what this game actually is first, because the “anime GTA” nickname, while funny, hides some genuinely interesting decisions.

First, the Confirmed Pile

House rule, same as always. If NetEase or Naked Rain said it on the record, it goes in the confirmed pile. Everything else gets labeled. Here is the confirmed pile for Ananta today.

The date. January 15, 2027, global launch, confirmed on stage at gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026, and repeated on the official site, the Steam page and every storefront listing since. Pre-registration opened the same day.

The platforms. PlayStation 5, PC (on Steam and through NetEase’s own client), iOS and Android. Four platforms, one day. No Xbox version has been announced. No Switch version has been announced. If that changes, I will update this page and pretend I never doubted them.

The price. Free. The Steam page files it under Free To Play, the official site sells nothing up front, and the download will cost you exactly zero dollars on every platform. Hold on to that fact, because it changes the whole fight with GTA 6, and I am coming back to it.

The game. Ananta is a single player urban open world RPG. You play the Captain of the ACD, an anti-chaos task force, rebuilding a fallen unit in a city where the supernatural keeps leaking into the daily commute. The first city is Nova City. At Opening Night Live, Naked Rain revealed a second city, Chongxiao, inspired by Shanghai and Hangzhou. NetEase’s own pitch, quoted by GamesBeat at the announcement, is three words long and completely shameless: “Go Viral. Save the World.” There are in-game social apps. There is a phone. There are side jobs. The trailers so far have shown driving, wall running, rooftop swinging, skateboards, bikes, fistfights, and a UFO that absolutely does not belong on anybody’s commute. You can swap between characters in the middle of a fight, which is the kind of chaos I personally enjoy.

The scale of the team. Naked Rain is a NetEase studio working out of Hangzhou and Montreal, and the roster of people attached to this thing is not small. This is not three friends and a dream. This is one of the biggest publishers in China spending real money to build a city.

The receipts so far. NetEase announced at gamescom that Ananta had passed 17 million pre-registrations across more than 110 countries, and the running total has kept climbing since, past 17.2 million at the last official count I saw. Seventeen million people signed up to be notified about a free game. Say what you want about free-to-play audiences, that is a launch runway most studios would trade a kidney for.

A Short History of Project Mugen

This game has been teasing us for a while. It was first announced at gamescom on August 24, 2023, under the working title Project Mugen, and the reveal trailer did enormous numbers because the pitch was so easy to understand: what if GTA, but anime, and the main character moves like he escaped from a Spider-Man game? The internet did the rest. “Anime GTA” was born in about fifteen minutes and NetEase has been living with the nickname ever since, happily, I suspect.

In November 2024, Project Mugen became Ananta, a Sanskrit word meaning infinity, or without end. There was a long quiet stretch after that, the kind of quiet that usually means trouble, with the game surfacing at Tokyo Game Show 2025 and then going dark again until the gamescom 2026 date announcement. Press at gamescom 2026 got to see the game up close, IGN ran hands-on coverage from the show, and the feedback loop I kept reading was the same: the city is real, the movement is the hook, and the scale is bigger than the trailers suggested.

The developers have also made one promise that deserves its own paragraph, labeled properly. In interviews around gamescom, reported by outlets like GameFragger, the team said they plan to support Ananta for at least seven years after launch, with more than 100 hours of content in the launch version if you do the story, roam and chase side activities. That is a REPORTED developer claim, not a guarantee, and live service history is a graveyard of seven year plans that lasted eleven months. But it tells you the ambition. This is not a game NetEase wants you to finish. It is a game NetEase wants you to move into.

The Gacha Question, Answered Honestly

Now the part that decides whether half of you keep reading. Ananta is a Chinese free-to-play RPG with a big cast of stylish characters. Your gacha alarm is going off. Mine went off too. So let us do this carefully, because the answer is better than expected, with one wrinkle I am not going to hide from you.

Here is the good news, and it is CONFIRMED from the developer’s own mouth. Naked Rain has said, on the record, that playable characters are unlocked by progressing through the story. Not by pulling on a banner. Not by gambling for a five star. In a developer interview with TechRadar back in December 2025, the team said they do not plan to implement character gacha mechanics, and that monetization will focus primarily on character skins. IGN repeated the no character gacha position in its gamescom 2026 coverage. Every character on the roster is earned by playing. In 2027, from a free-to-play game, that is close to a miracle.

Now the wrinkle, because my job is the whole truth and not the press release. The Google Play listing for Ananta carries the label “In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items),” and the App Store listing has a loot boxes advisory. PC Gamer has also noted that it is not yet confirmed whether cosmetics will be sold outright or through random draws of their own. So the honest summary is this: characters, confirmed not gacha, straight from the developer. Cosmetics, probably skins sold directly, but the store labels suggest some kind of random item exists somewhere in the shop, and NetEase has not fully detailed the cosmetic economy yet. Your wallet is safe from character banners. Your wallet should still keep one eye open until the shop is public. That is not a scandal. That is just me refusing to sell you a “no gacha, trust me” headline when the fine print has a footnote.

Why Eight Weeks After GTA 6 Might Be Genius

Okay. Back to the bet, because now you have the pieces.

GTA 6 is an $80, single purchase, story driven monster. I have a whole GTA 6 hub on this site tracking everything we know, and my launch plan involves no sleep and a Twitch stream, so nobody is questioning my loyalty here. But think about what the calendar looks like from NetEase’s chair. In November and December, GTA 6 eats the entire medium. Reviews, streams, clips, spoilers, everybody is in Leonida. Launching Ananta in that window would be suicide, free or not, because attention is the one currency a free game cannot buy its way out of.

By the middle of January, the curve bends. The hardcore crowd has finished the story. The clips slow down. Millions of players are still in the mood for a living city, still have the open world itch, but the credits have rolled and the itch has nowhere to go. And right there, on January 15, a brand new city opens. It costs nothing. It is already on the phone in your pocket. The download is the entire decision. Free-to-play games do not compete with GTA 6 on quality. They compete on friction, and zero dollars plus zero wait is as frictionless as this industry gets.

There is a second layer to it, and it is the phone. GTA 6 does not exist on mobile. Ananta launches on iOS and Android the same day as PS5 and PC, with the same account and the same city. NetEase is not only fishing in the “finished GTA 6” pond. It is fishing in the enormous pond of people who watched the GTA 6 phenomenon from outside because they do not own a console, and offering them the closest legal alternative, free, on the device they already have. Combined with 17 million pre-registrations, that is not a kamikaze launch. That is a company that did the math and picked its moment like a sniper.

And Why It Might Still Get Crushed

Now the other side, because I promised you both. January is not empty. Ananta shares its exact launch day, January 15, with Stranger Than Heaven, the new crime saga from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the Like a Dragon people, and that is not a small roommate. Two weeks later, February opens the gates of hell: Metro 2039, Tomb Raider, God of War Laufey, Persona 4 Revival and Fable inside three weeks. Ananta’s free price tag protects its wallet share. It does not protect its hours. Every evening a player spends in February’s pile-up is an evening they are not spending in Nova City, and live service games live or die on evenings.

There is also the shadow problem. Fair or not, every single thing Ananta does will be reviewed in GTA 6’s accent. Driving feels worse? GTA did it better. City feels emptier? GTA did it better. Cop AI, crowd density, radio, physics, all of it gets graded against the most expensive game ever made, eight weeks after that game rewired everyone’s standards. A free game getting graded like an $80 game is a brutal report card, and NetEase signed up for it voluntarily the moment the nickname stuck. The “anime GTA” label is the best marketing they never paid for, and also a sword pointed at their own throat.

There is also a second front NetEase has to fight, and it has nothing to do with Rockstar. The audience Ananta is courting, the anime city crowd, is not sitting around with empty hard drives. That audience already lives inside HoYoverse’s games and a bench of stylish gacha RPGs that update every few weeks and do not forgive absence. Ananta has to steal evenings from them too, with a story unlocked roster instead of a banner to pull on, which is either a refreshing act of confidence or a knife fight fought without a knife, depending on how generous the story pacing turns out to be. The no gacha decision wins every headline. Whether it wins the daily login war is a different and much longer question.

And the last risk is the oldest one in the genre: live service launch gravity. Servers, queues, bugs, a rough first patch, and a free audience that can uninstall you as casually as it installed you. Seventeen million pre-registrations is a runway. It is also seventeen million first impressions that all land on the same weekend. Ask me how January went after it happens and I will tell you the truth, same as here.

Where It Stands Now

So, receipts on the table. CONFIRMED: the date, January 15, 2027. The platforms, PS5, PC, iOS and Android. The price, free. The characters, earned through the story, no character gacha, per the developer. Two cities shown, Nova City and Chongxiao. More than 17 million people pre-registered. REPORTED: a seven year support plan and 100 plus hours of launch content, both developer claims from gamescom interviews, both to be judged after launch. NOT YET DETAILED: the full cosmetic shop, and whether those “random items” in the store listings mean cosmetic draws. NOT ANNOUNCED: Xbox and Switch versions.

My take? I am downloading it on day one, and I say that as a man whose entire November belongs to Rockstar. Not because I think Ananta beats GTA 6 at anything. Because the bet fascinates me. Everyone else in this industry treated GTA 6’s launch like a natural disaster and evacuated. NetEase treated it like weather: let the storm pass, then open your doors the moment people come back outside, and charge them nothing at the door. If it works, every free-to-play studio on Earth copies this playbook. If it fails, it fails loudly, in public, eight weeks after the biggest game launch in history, and we all learn something. Either way, January 15 is circled on my calendar in red. See you in Nova City. First one to find the UFO buys the noodles.
