GTA 6 Is Reportedly 210 GB — Is Your PS5 Ready?

Reports say GTA 6 needs 210 gigabytes on PS5. Two hundred and ten. For one game. Let me be honest right up front, because I do not want to be the guy who hypes you with a fake fact: Rockstar has not confirmed this number. Not officially, not anywhere. But the report behind it is stronger than the usual internet noise, and if it is even close to true, a lot of PS5s are about to have a very bad week. So let’s do this properly, you and me, before it becomes a midnight emergency: where the number came from, how big it really is next to the games already on your console, and exactly what you need to do before the preload opens.

By Ruan Martini — October 28, 2026 (updated October 31, 2026)

Where the 210 GB Number Came From

This did not start as a random Reddit guess. On October 27, 2026, the account PlayStation Game Size posted the figure on X: Grand Theft Auto VI, download size 210 GB, Standard edition, $79.99, preload November 12, release November 19. That account does one thing: it reads PlayStation’s own store database, the backend numbers Sony keeps before they show up on public pages. It has been first with accurate sizes for a long list of games before, which is why people take it seriously when it talks.

Then the story grew legs. GameSpot, Polygon, Dexerto and Kotaku all covered it the same day. And the part that matters most to me: Insider Gaming published the same 210 GB figure and said it could corroborate it independently. That is not one account yelling into the void anymore. That is a second newsroom putting its name next to the number.

Here is what did NOT happen, and I need you to hold onto this: Rockstar never confirmed it. Sony’s public store page still does not list a size. Nobody official has stood up and said “yes, 210.” So on this site the number lives in the reported box, in big honest letters, until Rockstar or the store itself says otherwise. Reported by a strong source is still reported. If the final number moves before launch, and database numbers sometimes do, we update this page and I will tell you it changed.

One more reported detail from the same wave of coverage, so you are not caught off guard: reports say the game will want a recent PS5 system software version installed before preload. Updating your console is free and takes ten minutes. Just do it this week and forget about it.

What 210 GB Actually Means on Your Console

Numbers like this mean nothing until you put them next to your own machine. And here is the first trap: the number on the box is a lie the whole industry tells. No PS5 gives you all the storage printed on the cardboard, because the system software keeps its cut before you install a single game.

Launch PS5 (825 GB on the box): about 667 GB actually usable. If the reported size is right, GTA 6 takes about 31% of the whole drive. A third. For Jason and Lucia. What is left after it moves in: roughly 457 GB.

PS5 Slim (1 TB on the box): about 848 GB usable. GTA 6 takes about 25% of it. A quarter of the drive for one game. What is left: roughly 638 GB.

Think about your PS5 right now: a handful of games installed, a pile of screenshots and clips, and some free space you never look at. Now delete a third of the drive in your head. That is the space this game wants. It is not a guest coming over for the weekend. It is a tenant moving in, and the tenant pays no rent.

And here is the part people miss: 200 GB free on launch week is not “almost enough” for a 210 GB install. It is nothing. The install just will not happen. You will be watching everybody else play on launch night while your console politely refuses. Not happening to us. Not on my watch.

How GTA 6 Stacks Up Against the Games You Already Own

Maybe 210 GB sounds big but abstract. Fine. Let’s weigh it against games that are probably sitting on your SSD right now. These are real PS5 sizes, checked against store listings and launch reports:

  • Grand Theft Auto VI (reported): 210 GB. The number we are planning around.
  • GTA 5 (PS5): 148.2 GB on the PlayStation Store today. Yes, really. The game from 2013 has eaten patches and updates for over a decade and it shows. GTA 6 reportedly beats its own grandfather by more than 60 GB.
  • Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: about 145 GB. This game was so big it shipped on two discs, because one PS5 disc holds about 100 GB and Square Enix ran out of disc. Two discs. In 2024.
  • Call of Duty: it depends how deep you are in. Black Ops 6 itself was about 84.4 GB to download on PlayStation, the shared Call of Duty HQ launcher adds roughly 73.6 GB, and if you stack Warzone and the older games on top, the full Call of Duty pile can climb toward 300 GB. Call of Duty is still the undefeated storage champion, but it cheats: it is five games wearing a trench coat.
  • Gran Turismo 7: about 110 GB of free space listed as the minimum when it launched, and it has only grown with years of free cars and tracks since.
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: about 98 GB. A whole New York, two Spider-Men, and it still comes in at less than half of GTA 6’s reported size.
  • God of War Ragnarök: about 93 GB on the store today. All nine realms. Less than half.

Read that list again. The biggest single games of this generation live somewhere between 90 and 150 GB. A reported 210 GB does not just top the chart, it stands on a chair above it. That is why this number got a whole article, and why I keep repeating “reported,” because a number this unusual needs its evidence shown.

Why Are Games This Big Now?

People ask me this like it is a conspiracy. It is mostly boring math wearing a scary costume.

The pictures got heavier. Games now ship with 4K textures for almost everything: every road sign, every shirt, every palm tree in Leonida, drawn at resolutions your TV can actually show. One uncompressed 4K texture is a fat file. A whole state full of them is a hard drive’s funeral. And somewhere along the line, “just ship it uncompressed, the players have space” became an industry motto. Friends, we do not have the space. That is the whole article.

The voices multiplied. A modern game carries full voice acting in many languages, not just subtitles. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s store listing alone shows full audio in English, Japanese, French and German. Every language is hours of recorded dialogue, and all of it sits on your SSD whether you ever hear it or not. A world like GTA 6’s, with radio stations, pedestrians yelling, phone calls and two protagonists talking constantly, is an audio warehouse.

Compression helps, but the world grew faster. The PS5 has genuinely clever compression tech that shrinks games compared to the PS4 era, and it is the only reason this list is not worse. God of War Ragnarök is smaller on PS5 than on PS4 for exactly that reason. But compression saving 20% does not save you when the game itself doubles. Leonida is reported to be a much bigger map than Los Santos, stuffed with far more interiors. Big world, big files. There is no free lunch, there is only rent, and the rent is 210 GB.

How Long Will the Download Take You?

The other question everybody asks me: okay, but how long am I staring at the progress bar? Here is the honest math. 210 GB is about 1,680 gigabits of data. Divide by your speed and you get your wait. These are example speeds, best case, with nobody else on your Wi-Fi and the servers behaving:

  • 100 Mbps: about 4 hours 40 minutes
  • 200 Mbps: about 2 hours 20 minutes
  • 300 Mbps: about 1 hour 35 minutes
  • 500 Mbps: about 56 minutes
  • 1 Gbps (gigabit fiber): about 28 minutes

Real life is slower than school math. Your speed dips, someone in the house starts a stream, and on preload night half the planet is pulling the same files. Read those numbers as “at best,” and then make the smartest decision available to you: none of this matters if you preload. The download opens November 12, a full week before launch, and that date is confirmed by Rockstar, not reported. Only the 5:00 AM ET start time is reported. Download it on the 12th while you sleep and launch night becomes a button press. Download it on the 19th and launch night becomes a documentary about a progress bar.

And one money detail so nobody gets surprised at the checkout: GTA 6 costs $79.99 for the Standard edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate. That part is confirmed, straight from Rockstar and Take-Two’s announcement. The boxed copy is a download code in a box, no disc, so physical buyers are downloading all 210 reported gigabytes too. The box is a souvenir. A nice one. Still a souvenir.

How to Check Your PS5 Storage (One Minute, Do It Tonight)

No app, no tutorial video needed. It is right there in the menus:

  1. Turn on your PS5 and go to the home screen.
  2. Open Settings, the little gear icon at the top right.
  3. Open Storage.
  4. Open Console Storage. You will see a bar showing how much is used and how much is free.
  5. Open Games and Apps to see what each game is eating, one by one.

Now look at your free number and be honest. 250 GB or more, you are probably fine, even with a day-one patch on top. Less than 220 GB, you have homework before November 12. And if it says something like 90 GB… friend, we need to talk about your life choices. Respectfully. I have been there.

What to Delete or Move First

Do not panic-delete the game you are playing right now. Go in this order:

  • The games you have not opened in months. You know the one. You keep saying you will finish it. You will not finish it before November 19. None of us will. Let it go. You can download it again later.
  • Duplicate versions. A lot of PS5s quietly hold both the PS4 and the PS5 version of the same game. Double rent for one tenant.
  • Your captures. Open the Media Gallery. Months of clips you never watched again can quietly add up to real gigabytes.
  • Move PS4 games to a USB drive. PS4 games can run from USB extended storage, so they do not need the fast internal drive. PS5 games cannot run from USB, which brings me to the next part.

The preload starts November 12 (that date is official, straight from Rockstar), so this is a this-week job, not a tonight emergency. Just do not leave it for November 18 and then call me in a panic. November 18 you is stressed enough already.

Thinking About an Expansion SSD? Read This First

Here is the rule that confuses everybody: PS5 games have to live on the internal SSD or on an M.2 expansion SSD inside the console. A USB drive can store PS5 games, like a closet, but you cannot play them from there. You have to copy them back first. So a cheap USB drive does not solve a launch-night problem. It is a parking lot, not a garage.

If your drive is always full, an M.2 expansion SSD is the real fix, and the rules are simple. Sony wants a PCIe Gen4 NVMe drive with a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster, with a heatsink on it. The two names that get recommended everywhere, because they clear that bar with room to spare:

  • WD Black SN850X — up to 7,300 MB/s read, sold in a version with the heatsink already fitted for the PS5.
  • Samsung 990 Pro with Heatsink — up to 7,450 MB/s read, the other default answer to this exact question.

Capacity advice from every storage guide, and I agree with it: 2 TB is the sweet spot. It roughly triples a launch PS5’s usable space and ends the delete-a-game ritual for a long while. One honest warning: SSD prices climbed through 2026, so treat any price you see quoted in an article (one recent guide put the 2 TB SN850X at around $350) as a weather report, not a promise. Check the live price the day you buy.

But be honest with yourself first: deleting is free. Try free first. If the cleanup above still does not get you to 220–250 GB free, then the SSD conversation starts, and it is a good conversation. Just do not buy hardware to protect a pile of games you have not opened since 2023.

What We Still Don’t Know

This part stays separate and clear, because this is where the internet starts inventing things:

Rockstar has not confirmed the 210 GB size. It has been reported from PlayStation’s database and independently corroborated by Insider Gaming, but until Rockstar or the PlayStation Store says it officially, it stays in the “reported” box on this site.

We do not know the Xbox sizes. Series X, Series S, nothing confirmed or even solidly reported yet.

We do not know the Ultimate Edition size. Extra content usually means extra gigabytes, but “usually” is not a number, so I am not giving you one.

We do not know the day-one patch size. Big games love a big launch patch, which is exactly why the advice is 220–250 GB free instead of 210 on the dot. The patch needs a chair at the table too.

The final size could change. What sits in a database in late October is not always what downloads in November. If it changes, we update this page.

The Bottom Line

The whole story in one breath: GTA 6 is reportedly 210 GB on PS5, Rockstar has not confirmed it, and the smart move is the same either way. Check your storage tonight, clear it to 220–250 GB free, and be ready when the preload opens on November 12 (that date is confirmed). Launch night is November 19, I will be live from midnight testing this game properly, and nobody here is getting stuck watching a download bar while Leonida opens without us.

So tell me: how much space do YOU have free right now? Go check, then drop the number in the comments on the video. Smallest number wins my respect and my pity.
