GTA 6 Preload Starts November 12: Get the Download Done Before Launch Night

GTA 6 Preload Starts November 12: Get the Download Done Before Launch Night

By Ruan Martini, Daily Checkpoint

On the night of November 18, I will be awake at midnight, live on stream, playing GTA 6 the second it unlocks. I work the next morning. I do not care. That part of the plan is locked, and it only works if one boring thing happens a week earlier: the game has to be sitting on my console, downloaded and installed. Launch night is for playing. It is not for watching a progress bar argue with my internet.

That is what this guide is for: the confirmed date, the settings buried in menus nobody opens, and one very large file size number that Rockstar itself has never said out loud.

Preload is a download, not a head start

Quick honesty check before the steps, because every launch cycle somebody gets this wrong and ends up furious at a locked game tile. Preloading means your console downloads the complete game early and installs it. It does not mean you can play early. The files sit on your drive behind a timer, and the timer runs out on November 19, when GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you see a video this month claiming somebody is already playing because they preloaded, you are watching a lie with good lighting.

What preload actually buys you is time, and this game is not small. A week of preload window turns a launch night disaster into a non-event: the download drips in while you sleep, the day one patch lands on top of it, and at midnight the only thing between you and Leonida is a license check that takes seconds.

The date is confirmed. The hour and the size are not.

Rockstar announced the preload itself in its official pre-order announcement on the Newswire, back on June 24, 2026, and the wording is worth hearing exactly: players who pre-order digital versions of Grand Theft Auto VI will be able to begin pre-loading on November 12, to ensure they are able to play at launch on November 19. That is Rockstar, in writing. Build your week around it.

The same announcement confirms the boxed version works the same way with one extra step: the physical edition holds a download code inside the box, no disc, and it goes on sale starting November 12 to support pre-loading. So boxed buyers are not locked out of the preload party. They just have to redeem the code first, which makes the timing of that box arriving at your house a real factor.

Now for the two things Rockstar did not give us, starting with the hour: the announcement names a date and no time. Coverage citing Rockstar’s support material describes the preload opening at local midnight on November 12, and US reporting has pointed to the early hours of that morning, 5:00 AM ET, as when downloads open. Both of those are reports, not an announced time. Treat any exact hour as reported until your own store page shows the download live that week.

Second, the size. Rockstar and Sony have published no official file size. The number everywhere, 210 GB, comes from PlayStation Game Size, an account that tracks PlayStation Store backend data, which posted it on October 27, 2026 for the Standard Edition on PS5. Insider Gaming said it could corroborate the figure, and Eurogamer, GamesRadar+ and GameSpot all covered it. A strong report, with a real track record behind the source, but still a report. Nobody has a reported size for Xbox or for the Ultimate Edition, just a placeholder on the Xbox store page. So plan for 210 GB, because preparing for less is how you end up deleting games at 1 AM, and know that Rockstar could still make that number look silly in either direction.

What your pre-order already includes

Two extras ride along with the pre-order, and both have fine print worth knowing before November 12.

Every pre-order, and every purchase made before November 20, includes the Vintage Vice City Pack: a 1955 Vapid Stanier sedan and garage, plus vintage outfits, hairstyles and weapon finishes. Buy the game on launch day and you still get it. Buy it on November 21 and you do not. Simple deadline, easy to miss.

Digital pre-orders also include one month of GTA+, Rockstar’s subscription. Free month, nice perk, one catch that IGN flagged during the pre-order period: the subscription auto-renews when the free month ends. If you want the month and nothing after it, go into your account’s subscription settings and cancel the renewal. Two minutes now beats a surprise charge in December.

Prices, for the record, since they decide which tile you are preloading: $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition in the US. The preload date, the pack and the GTA+ month apply to both.

PS5: the preload steps

I play on PS5 Pro, so this is the route I am taking myself. Do these now, not on the 12th, because steps two and three are what make the download start on its own.

  1. Pre-order the digital version on the PlayStation Store, signed into the account you will actually play on. The preload follows the buying account, not the console. Boxed copy instead? Your preload cannot start until you redeem the code: PlayStation Store, the “…” menu at the top of the screen, Redeem Codes.
  2. Turn on automatic downloads. Settings, then Saved Data and Game/App Settings, then Automatic Updates. Switch on Auto-Download, and Auto-Install in Rest Mode while you are there.
  3. Let the console work while it sleeps. Settings, then System, then Power Saving, then Features Available in Rest Mode. Switch on Stay Connected to the Internet. Then leave the console in rest mode instead of switching it fully off. A PS5 that is off is a PS5 that is not downloading your 210 GB.
  4. From November 12, check the countdown. Open your Game Library and select Grand Theft Auto VI. Pre-ordered games show a countdown timer. Select it and make sure the boxes next to the game content are ticked, so everything downloads automatically.
  5. Confirm it is actually moving. Press the PS button and open Downloads/Uploads. If nothing has started on its own, go back to the game’s library page and choose Download manually. Do not just trust the settings and walk away for three days.
  6. Away from home that week? The PlayStation App can push the download to your console if rest mode and Stay Connected to the Internet are on. Ask me how I know that scenario is coming.

Xbox Series X|S: the preload steps

Same idea, different menus. Microsoft’s own support pages describe the same deal as PlayStation: pre-ordered games can be downloaded before release, and they stay locked until the release time.

  1. Pre-order in the Microsoft Store on your console, the Xbox app or the web, signed into the account you will play on. Boxed code? Redeem it in the Microsoft Store the moment the box reaches you, from November 12 onward. No redeem, no download.
  2. Settings, then System, then Updates. Turn on Keep my games & apps up to date.
  3. Settings, then General, then Power options. Choose Sleep, not Shutdown. Sleep keeps downloads and installs running while the console is off. Shutdown is the energy saver, and it is also how your preload spends November 12 doing nothing.
  4. From November 12, the install should begin by itself. If it does not, start it by hand: My games & apps, then See all, then Full library, find Grand Theft Auto VI and select Install.
  5. The Xbox app can also send the install to your console remotely, as long as the console is set to Sleep and connected. Handy if you own an Xbox and a job.

The storage math

Time to talk about the part nobody enjoys: making room. If the reported 210 GB is right, or even close, GTA 6 is one of the biggest single installs most consoles have ever taken, and the time to discover your drive is full is this week, while deleting things still feels calm.

Work with 220 to 250 GB of free space as your target. The reported install takes the first 210. The rest is breathing room: a day one patch has to land somewhere, and the PS5 will flatly refuse to start a download that does not fit. Running a preload into a wall on November 12 and then panic-deleting your library is a tradition this site would like to help retire.

The usable space on your console is not the number printed on the box, either. A launch PS5 advertises 825 GB and gives you about 667 GB to actually use. An Xbox Series X gives you about 802 GB. A Series S gives you about 364 GB, which means a 210 GB GTA 6 would eat well over half of everything that console can hold. Series S owners, your cleanup is not optional, it is the whole event. On my PS5 Pro the 2 TB drive turns this into a five minute chore instead of an eviction.

Run the download-time math on the reported size and the week of preload stops looking generous and starts looking necessary. 210 GB at 100 Mbps is roughly four hours and forty minutes. At 50 Mbps it is over nine hours. At 500 Mbps it is under an hour, congratulations, this section is not about you. For most houses, this is a download you start and then go live your life around, which is exactly what the November 12 window is for.

Park games properly if you need the room. On PS5, games can sit on a USB drive as storage, but they have to be copied back to the internal SSD, or an installed M.2 SSD, before they will play. On Xbox, Series X|S games only play from the internal drive or the official expansion cards; a USB drive is a parking lot, not a garage. Move the backlog now, while it is boring, instead of during launch week, when it will feel like a boss fight.

When the download refuses to start

Most preload problems are not mysteries. They are one of these four, in roughly this order of how often they will ruin somebody’s evening.

Nothing has started and it is already November 12. Check the account first. If you are signed into a different account than the one that bought the game, the store will calmly tell you that you do not own it, because as far as that account knows, you do not. Then check that Auto-Download or Keep my games & apps up to date is actually on, and if everything looks right, start the download manually from the library. Consoles miss their own cues sometimes.

The download is paused, or crawling. On PS5, press the PS button, open Downloads/Uploads and resume it, and check your connection while you are there. On Xbox, close whatever game is running: Xbox downloads slow to a crawl while a game is being played, and GTA 6 should be first in the queue with nothing ahead of it. On both consoles, a wired connection beats Wi-Fi for a file this size, and it is not close.

The boxed code does nothing. It will not, until it is redeemed, and the box itself only goes on sale November 12. If your retailer ships late, your preload starts late. That is the boxed version’s one real disadvantage, and it is a shipping problem, not a you problem.

It downloaded days ago and still shows a countdown. That is the system working. The timer runs to November 19, the files stay locked, and the Play button appears when your region unlocks. IGN read the PlayStation Store listings in September and put the unlock at midnight local time. Rockstar has never published an unlock hour, so file that under reported, and expect New Zealand to be insufferable about it first, as is tradition.

My plan for preload week

My own calendar is simple. Settings and storage get sorted this week. On November 12 I redeem nothing, because my copy is digital, and I confirm with my own eyes that the download is moving before I go to bed. Then the PS5 Pro sits in rest mode for a week doing the least exciting and most important job in this house. On November 19 at midnight I am live, the game unlocks, and the only download left is whatever patch Rockstar ships that day, which the console handles by itself.

Do the chores in that order and launch night becomes what it is supposed to be: you, a controller, and a state you have waited years to drive in. Skip them and launch night becomes you, a settings menu, and a very long bar. I have streamed enough plans going sideways to know which version I am filming.

See you in Leonida. Download first.
