The short version, before the spreadsheets come out
Buy the Standard Edition. Play the game. If Leonida gets its hooks into you and you catch yourself staring through the window of a tattoo parlor the game will not let you enter, buy the upgrade later, because Rockstar sells it separately and the total comes out the same. That is the whole article in one breath, and it is not a cop-out: the Ultimate Edition is the first big game bundle in years where waiting costs you nothing, and almost nobody online is telling you that part.
Still with me? Good, because the details are where this gets funny. The extra $20 buys sixteen items. Fourteen of them are things you wear, drive, or hang on a wall. Exactly two of them are things you actually do. And five entire shops in Leonida stay dark unless you pay. Rockstar hid a genuine little paywall inside the fancy edition, then politely handed everyone the key to skip it. Let me walk the whole list with you.
Two editions, same game, same midnight
Take-Two announced the pricing on June 24, 2026, and pre-orders opened the next day. Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in exactly two editions:
- Standard Edition: $79.99
- Ultimate Edition: $99.99
Both editions are the same game, the same single-player campaign, unlocking at the same moment on November 19. No edition gets early access. Read that sentence twice if you have been burned by “play three days early” bundles before, because this is not one of those. The PlayStation Store page describes GTA 6 flatly as a single-player experience, and Rockstar has put nothing, in any edition, between you and launch night except a download.
What about the $399.99 box some of you saw floating around, the Goodtime State: Vice City Collection? Merchandise. Eleven items of physical stuff, and the Rockstar Store listing is clear that the game is sold separately. It is a very expensive hat collection, not a third edition. Ignore it for this decision.
Standard Edition: the game, full stop
Rockstar’s own support page sums up the Standard Edition in five words: it “includes the game.” No asterisk, no missing chapter, no shortened campaign. You get Jason and Lucia’s full story, the whole map, every mission the designers built. Nothing in Rockstar’s documentation describes the Standard Edition as a lesser version of the story, because it is not one.
Owners of this edition also keep a door open: Rockstar confirms the Ultimate Edition Upgrade can be purchased separately “at any time,” including by people who bought the physical box, once their download code is redeemed. Hold onto that fact. It quietly deletes all the pressure from this purchase.
What both editions get if you buy before November 20
Every pre-order, and every purchase made before November 20, 2026, includes the Vintage Vice City Pack, on Standard and Ultimate alike. Per Rockstar’s editions documentation, the pack contains:
- A ’55 Vapid Stanier Sedan, plus a garage for it
- Outfits and hairstyles for Jason and Lucia
- An exclusive weapon pattern

Digital pre-orders get one more thing: one month of GTA+, Rockstar’s membership, and Take-Two’s announcement points out that the month is redeemable immediately, so you can spend it inside GTA Online and the GTA+ Games Library (GTA 5 and other Rockstar classics) while you wait for November 19. Two catches from the PlayStation Store’s offer terms: the month has to be claimed by March 31, 2027, and the subscription keeps billing at the regular monthly price after the free month unless you cancel. Set a reminder on your phone the day you redeem it. Future you says thanks.
Pre-loading starts November 12 at local midnight for digital pre-orders, per Rockstar’s support page, which means a full week to drag the game down over whatever internet you have. Mine has seen things. It will survive.
The Ultimate list, all sixteen items
The Ultimate Edition is the game plus the Ultimate Edition Upgrade, and Rockstar’s editions page describes the bundle as bonuses “threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story, with new items uncovered behind each chapter.” Translation: you do not get a pile of toys at the title screen. The extras arrive as the story unfolds. Here is every item, straight from Rockstar’s list, with the PlayStation Store’s descriptions doing the detail work.

Cars, boats and things with engines (five):
- ’95 Grotti Cheetah. A mid-nineties sports car with a retro-futuristic livery, saved for later-stage action.
- Jason’s Safehouse Vehicles. An army-colored Dinka Enduro motorcycle and a Crest Kayak. A kayak. In GTA. I have questions too.
- Ganado Retro Build. Exclusive muscle mods for Jason’s beat-up Vapid Ganado pickup.
- Shitzu Squalo. A gradient pink and blue boat docked at Washington Beach, fitted with an explosives-laden weapons crate, because fishing in Leonida is apparently a contact sport.
- ’67 Vapid Dominator Buggy and Garage. An off-road buggy for the Mount Kalaga backwoods, stored at the Paradise Garage in Watson Bay, which also gives you a weapon locker and a secure spot to stash stolen goods for fencing.
Weapons (two):
- Hawk and Little Morgan Revolvers. His-and-hers engraved revolvers with palm-tree-etched grips and a performance scope, sourced in the fiction from the Vercetti Estate. Yes, that Vercetti. The nostalgia department is working overtime.
- Personalized Weapon Variants. Engraved versions of Jason’s Girardi ES9 pistol and Lucia’s Klose K17 pistol.
Style (two):
- Vice City Style. Exclusive outfits, hairstyles and tattoos for both protagonists.
- Goodtime Gear. A capsule of apparel and accessories themed on Macca the Gator, a TV character inside the game’s world. Merch about fictional merch. We are through the looking glass.
Things you actually do (two):
- PTT Youngin$ Compound. A raid on the compound of a loud Southside Vice City gang, escaping with special items and contraband.
- Classic Car Collection. A commission from Wyman, an eccentric collector and fixer: track down abandoned classic and project cars across Leonida and restore them to their former glory. Of everything on this list, this is the one my car brain keeps circling back to.
Five destinations that only open with the Ultimate Edition:
- Rideout Customs. A mod shop turning plain vehicles into rolling art: detailed interiors, serious rims, donk styling.
- One-Eyed Willie’s. Lake Leonida’s mod shop for off-road builds and hand-painted automotive art.
- Sara’s Unisex Salon. Signature hairstyles for both leads, facial hair for Jason, makeup and nails for Lucia.
- Stock 305. A Stockyard streetwear store with exclusive looks.
- Electric Fang Tattoo. Over 50 signature tattoos for Jason and Lucia, designed by the artist collective FAILE.
Count the shops again, because this is the part of the Ultimate Edition that is genuinely new for the series. Rockstar has put storefronts inside the single-player world that Standard owners simply cannot walk into. Not cosmetic skins for shops everyone shares. Doors that stay shut. You can decide that is a fair trade for $20, plenty of players will, but you should walk in knowing the doors exist.
The honest math on twenty dollars
Sixteen items for $20 works out to $1.25 an item, and if Rockstar sold them off a menu, most of us would grab four or five favorites and call it a day. They are not sold off a menu. So grade the bundle by category instead:
The cars, weapons and clothes (eleven of the sixteen, counting the style packs) are garnish. Good garnish, some of it clearly made with love, the revolvers especially, but garnish. Your campaign will not play differently because Lucia’s pistol has engraving on it.
The two activities are real content, yet they are side content. A compound raid and a car restoration commission sound like exactly the kind of afternoon-filler Leonida will be full of anyway. I want the car one. Wanting is not the same as needing it on day one.
The five shops are the strongest argument for the upgrade, because they change what parts of the world respond to you. Car people will feel Rideout Customs and One-Eyed Willie’s being locked. Everyone else will walk past a dark salon and shrug.
Now the number that settles it. Rockstar’s support page guarantees the upgrade can be bought separately at any time after your game code is redeemed. On the US Microsoft Store, the upgrade has been listed at $20.00 (reported by multiple outlets that read the store listing through the fall), which puts Standard plus upgrade at exactly $99.99, the Ultimate price to the cent. Rockstar has not published an upgrade price on its own pages, and recent checks of the PlayStation Store listing showed the upgrade without a buyable price, so PlayStation players should glance at their store before assuming the math is identical. But the shape of it is clear: there is no pre-order premium baked into the Ultimate Edition, no discount for committing early, and no penalty for waiting until you have played the game and know whether you care about donk rims.
The box on the shelf is not what you think
One trap deserves its own section, because it will catch real people in real stores. The physical edition of GTA 6 contains a download code in the box and no disc, confirmed by Rockstar’s support page in those exact terms. The box goes on sale November 12, a week before launch, specifically so code buyers can redeem and pre-load on the same schedule as digital buyers. It is a Standard Edition product only: no physical Ultimate Edition exists. Box buyers also give up the free GTA+ month, which is a digital pre-order perk, though the Vintage Vice City Pack is included on the physical code.
So the shelf copy is a $79.99 gift card wearing a trench coat. Buy it for the shelf, buy it as a gift, just know what is inside: paper.
Who should buy which
Buy Standard if you are here for the story, you play a campaign once or twice, or your budget has opinions. You lose nothing that matters, and your upgrade path stays open forever. This is most people, and it is not a budget pick. It is the pick the math supports.
Buy Ultimate if you already know you are the player who photographs cars at red lights, rebuilds outfits between missions, and will one hundred percent restore every rusting classic Wyman points at. If the five shops read to you like five extra rooms in a house you plan to live in for a year, $20 is cheap rent.
Buy the box if you want something on the shelf or you are handing it to someone on their birthday. Then redeem the code on November 12 like the rest of us.
My take
I cover this game for a living on this site and on my channel, I play on a PS5 Pro, and I will be live at midnight on November 19 with the rest of the world. People assume that makes me an automatic Ultimate buyer. Here is my honest advice instead, the same thing I would tell a friend at the store counter: the game is the meal, the Ultimate extras are seasoning, and Rockstar, to their credit, left the seasoning on the table for you to grab later at the same price. Buy the $79.99 game. Let Leonida itself convince you, sometime around hour thirty, that you need a donk shop and a project car with your name on it. If it does, the upgrade is sitting right there. If it does not, you kept your $20, and the Cheetah was never going to miss you.
Receipts over hype, always. Standard first. Upgrade when the game earns it.
